BRC Limited

Our history

Originally founded at Saltney near Chester in 1908, the Hall family bought BRC in 1911 and moved it to Trafford Park, Manchester, where they started a combined reinforcing bar and fabric production unit.

The Trafford Park warehouseEventually, the Manchester premises became too small and plans were drawn up for a new factory and housing estate in Stafford. From 1924-1926 the construction of offices, drawing offices and a large four-bay factory were undertaken. At the same time, 66 houses were built on a modern estate and Burton Manor and grounds were bought for recreational facilities.

By the mid 1930s a further three bays had been added to cope with growing demand for welded mesh.

Wire was brought in by road and rail in its finished drawn form until 1956, at which time a wire mill was constructed to enable wire drawing to be undertaken on site.

BRC Stafford in the 1950sBy this time, BRC also had two London offices and branch offices in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle-on-Tyne, Sheffield, Cardiff, Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin, in addition to its head office and works at Stafford.

Export also flourished and, to meet demand, factories were set up in South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Barbados, Malawi, Indonesia, Pakistan, Jamaica, Bahrain and, more recently, India and Vietnam; the majority of these being operated with local partners.

1976 - 50 years progress

"In 1908 the B.R.C was founded at Chester. My grandfather then bought the company circa 1911..." So begins a letter to all employees dated 25 May 1976 from 'The British Reinforced Concrete Engineering Co. Ltd.' View the letter here.

Present-day mesh manufacturingBack in the UK, with additional space once again required, a large bar reinforcement factory was built in 1971. Unfortunately, a Victorian cottage, used as a dining facility for the directors, stood in the way of the development. To save the only remaining part of the original site, it was decided to move the brick-built cottage by jacking it up, fixing wheels to a ring beam, cast under the walls and pushing it to a new position. This was the first time a brick building had been moved in this manner!

1975 saw the establishment of BRC Manufacturing at Barnsley, where it remains to this day despite having grown and developed new product ranges over the decades. BRC Reinforcement has evolved too, developing a wide range of concrete accessories. Further developments include offering steel reinforcement pre-fabrication and detailing as part of its 'Reinforcement solutions' service – all designed to reduce construction programmes and minimize site labour costs .

Today, the companies that comprise BRC Limited remain the largest manufacturers of engineered steel solutions, serving construction and related markets with excellent levels of technical resource and innovative products.
